FireSpotter

Forest Fire Fighting Technology

FireSpotter is an integrated software / hardware real-time system that assists in the fighting of fires in dense smoky areas. It is designed to be operated by a spotter from an aircraft. An infrared camera will be used to locate a hot spot of a fire through dense smoke kilometers away. The spotter takes multiple bearings of the fire's hot spot. The hot spot's position is then triangulated in latitude / longitude then displayed in real-time on a mapping system. The target position is then relayed to a water-bombing crew. FireSpotter uses a real-time GPS positioning system as well as a hand-held spotting instrument which includes an infrared camera, compass and attitude sensor.

FireSpotter's real-time multi-layer world mapping system displays the GPS position of the aircraft at the appropriate coordinates on our world map. The map supports both Environmental Systems Research Institute's shape files and standard Windows bitmap files. The user can import, edit and delete map layers as well as pan and zoom in and out from the span of the world to approximately 1 km. FireSpotter displays sensor and GPS position in real-time while showing the fires position and error factor both graphically and in textual format.
