IRUS

IRUS is a small sensor module designed to easily mount and interface onto a variety of Mobile Robotic Platforms. With simple wiring a network of sensors can be added around your robot to provide 360° surveillance.

Product Benefits

The IRUS sensor module combines the capabilities of both InfraRed and UltraSonic distance measurements for enhanced reliability of obstacle detection in a variety of situations.

Both of these sensor technologies operate on sensing a reflection of a generated beam. Very few materials and or shapes will absorb and not reflect both light and sound energy.

With a good overlap of accurate ranging in the .2 to 1.5m distance reliable obstacle avoidance can be acheived even in noisy or otherwise difficult environments.

The IRUS product line includes various features and options to enable a good fit into a variety of robotic applications.

Product Features

  • IR and US ranging sensor in a convenient module for mounting where needed on Robots
  • 4 wire interface cable for simple and robust installations
  • Multiple sensor modules can be daisy chained on one cable to streamline cabling requirements and installation
  • Powerdown mode for battery saving when the robot is not moving.
  • Continuous scan mode for maximum sensor update rate.
  • Polled scan mode for sequencing multiple units that may 'hear' each other.

Product Specifications

IRUS can be ordered with IR ranging sensors options operating in 2 ranges:

  1. Short range : 10cm to 80cm

The Short range option may be more suitable for 1) smaller slower moving robots, or 2) side and rear sensors on a larger robot.

  2. Long range : 20cm to 150cm

The Long range option is more suitable for 1) faster robots or 2) front sensors on your robot.

IRUS can report ranges in a few format options:

  • raw sensor reading for host conversion and calibration.
  • distance in mm from front of the module using internal calibration curves and constants.
Note: Although ranges may be reported in mm precision of ranges are not expected to be better than 1cm.

The response curve of the IR Sensor is basically a log function with higher precision at closer distances.

The response curve of the US Sensor is basically a linear function with equal precision over the whole range.

Power Supply Options:
  • 5VDC regulated
  • 6-9VDC unregulated
  • 8-24VDC unregulated
Communication Options:
  • I2C bus standard
  • TTL level Async serial
  • RS-485 Async Serial
Note: all the IRUS Modules on a cable bus must have the same option.

IRUS Ordering Information

IRUS Part numbers are as follows: IRUS01-rupc
